About us
My fascination with tattoos started when my uncle came home from sea with a tattoo. I kept asking him all kinds of questions about tattoos and where I could learn how to make them. My dad said that normally kids want to be fire fighters or police men, but I wanted to be a tattoo artist! He thought it was just a phase I'd grow out of. But I never did.
For 7 years, starting in the mid 1970s, I tattooed my friends for free just so that I could get as much experience as possible. In the early 80s I opened my first studio — TONY’S TATTOO STUDIO. It was closed down by the authorities because the ceiling was too low. When I had rebuilt the studio in accordance with appropriate building and health codes, I was told the real reason why my studio was closed down; the authorities were opposed to any and all kinds of tattoo activity. They expected tattooing to be banned in Norway in the near future and therefore discouraged me from continuing in the business. I refused to give up and told them that if a anti-tattooing law was passed, I'd just move across the border to Sweden and continue to advertise my services in Norway. At the same time there was a nationwide debate about tattooing and the health risks involved. I'm not denying the fact that it can be dangerous to get a tattoo, but only if the proper and necessary health standards are followed. At least something positive resulted from all of this — I opened a new studio in Berg and came up with the name STARLIGHT TATTOOING. I came up with the name while I was drawing a logo with two tattooing machines in a meteor storm. I never used the logo, but I kept the name.
I moved studios again; first to a place called Tistedalen, then to Drammen; January 20 1992 I opened STARLIGHT TATTOOING in Haugesgt. 84. I soon had so many customers that I needed a larger studio, and so I once again opened a new studio, this time in Øvre Storgt. 9 (across from Drammen Teater). The new studio is designed as a 1950s diner, and in addition to giving tattoos we now also have a coffee shop – a well received addition to our business.
